Nagambie’s Hugh Traynor-Murphy, 12, hopped, skipped and jumped his way to gold at the Victorian Junior Track and Field Championships in Melbourne last month.
Competing in both the triple jump and long jump at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park, Traynor-Murphy claimed first place in the triple jump with a leap measuring 10.69 metres.
The St Joseph’s student also finished sixth in the long jump.
With little background in athletics, Traynor-Murphy’s natural athletic ability came to the fore, with the Year 6 student also a keen football player and swimmer.
Traynor-Murphy’s journey to the state competition, held on October 24, started with his school sports day, and was followed by district and regional events.
