A day at the races is a good reason to slough off the comfy trackies and shapeless jumpers that have been keeping everyone warm through the chilly months and find a great outfit to welcome the warmer weather.
Oaks Day, on the Thursday after the Melbourne Cup, has traditionally been considered ‘ladies’ day’ and the Shepparton branch of Soroptimist International has created an event for local women to enjoy an afternoon of fun, fashion, food and great company.
“It’s a great day for ladies to dress up and have a great day out and enjoy themselves,” organising committee co-ordinator Elaine Lenon said.
Guests will be welcomed with a glass of champagne on arrival and a two-course meal will be served.
There will be a parade of fashions from major sponsors, Shop 221 in Shepparton and Pampens Boutique in Mooroopna, plus hats from Vintage Chics in Grahamvale.
Prizes for the Best Dressed Lady and Best Hat will be awarded, and there will be lucky door prizes and sweeps throughout the afternoon.
Committee member Julie Ellis said she enjoyed inviting her friends to come along.
“It’s a really fun day,” she said.
The event is part of the club’s fundraising activities and its major raffle will be drawn on the afternoon. There will also be a craft and trading table.
The major recipients of funds raised will be the Oncology Department at Goulburn Valley Health, drought assistance for farming families and the Berry Street Youth Foyer.
Other groups to benefit will be announced on the day.
The Oaks Day lunch will be held at Sherbourne Terrace, Wyndham St, Shepparton from noon to 3.45pm on Thursday, November 7.
Tickets cost $50 and are available by phoning Elaine Lenon on 0438 253 886. She is happy to deliver tickets if necessary.
WHAT IS A SOROPTIMIST?
Soroptimist International is a women’s service club that aims to achieve the best for women in all aspects of their life.
The Shepparton branch of the club has been running for 49 years and has almost 30 members.
In the past year the hardworking members of the branch have raised more than $25000.
Funds raised by the branch are donated to local charities.
New members are always welcome, and you can check out the club’s activities on its Facebook page.
WHAT ARE WE WEARING?
Vicki de Quilettes from Shop 221 said the fashions on the field trend this year was for colour and florals.
For headwear, fashionistas are opting for little headband-style fascinators, or a single flower on a clip.
