Rennes stun champions PSG in Ligue 1

By AAP Newswire

Paris Saint-Germain have suffered an early first defeat of the new French Ligue 1 campaign after Rennes came from behind to win 2-1 at Roazhon Park.

Edinson Cavani had given the visitors the lead in the 36th minute when he capitalised on a stray pass in the penalty area from Rennes captain Damien Da Silva.

However, the hosts were level just before halftime through a fine shot on the turn by M'Baye Niang.

Romain Del Castillo headed the home side in front soon after the restart and they could have added another when Jeremy Morel's volley came back off the post.

PSG - again with Neymar left out of the side as speculation continues over his future - offered few clear-cut chances in the second half.

Rennes, meanwhile, continued their 100 per cent start to the new campaign to sit third on six points alongside Lyon and Nice.

In Sunday's earlier matches, Denis Bouanga struck late to salvage a point for St Etienne at home to newly-promoted Brest.

The visitors, who made a good start with a draw at home to Toulouse last week, went ahead through defender Julien Faussurier in first-half injury-time.

But Bouanga proved a constant threat for the home side and he forced a fine save out of Brest keeper Gauthier Larsonneur in the 76th minute.

The hosts' pressure finally told seven minutes from time when Bouanga pounced on a cross from substitute Arnaud Nordin to secure a point.

Alexander Djiku missed a couple of good chances as Strasbourg were forced to settle for a goalless draw at Reims.

Strasbourg coach Thierry Laurey opted to start with the likes of Lamine Kone and Dimitri Lienard on the bench, having one eye on Thursday's Europa League clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Djiku should have done better with his opportunities, while Reims keeper Predrag Rajkovic made some important saves to help earn a point.
