Summer racing starts for Echuca

By Andrew Johnston

THE magic of spring racing is now behind us, but Echuca Racing Club is moving forward as it holds its first meeting of summer.

And a summer track at home is the perfect situation for Star of Man.

The Mick Cornish and Donna Gaskin trained five-year-old has just one win to his name in his 18 career starts, coming on his home track on the final day of 2018.

Since then he has remained a regular on the Echuca course while battling to get back into winning form and will be hunting another success in the 1600m race six this afternoon.

Mick Cornish said it's as much of a mental battle as anything with the young runner.

“He's had a bit of bad luck,” he said.

“It's a shame because he's probably lost a bit of confidence. That's disappointing for us because we saw early on how much talent he has, he's definitely got a lot in him and could be a great runner.

“(Today) will be a real test for him. He has a great jockey and a really good barrier to run from. If he can get a good run in, he's a chance, but it's a case of him making his own luck at this point.”

While today's event will not heavily feature local horses, the eight-race card will none the less a great event for all locals to attend.
