But it doesn't mean the platform can't play an important role.
Saturday's one-day game between Echuca and Echuca South at Victoria Park had form more riding on it than just the competition points, with the clubs combining to raise money for the CFA.
The game had several local businesses donating, a raffle and bar sales, as well as player sponsorship and floating donation tins with a final total of $5463.60 raised.
Echuca's Matt Hinks said the day had been exactly what both clubs were hoping for.
“It was a massive success for everyone involved,” he said.
“We were really excited to see the number of people who came down and took part in the day and helped to raise a bit of money for a fantastic cause.”
Hinks said seeing people come and take part in the day was incredibly special for everyone.
“It was especially great to see some firies come down to the ground and take part in the day.”
Echuca South's Grady Smith said the exact total of fundraising was still being calculated.
“We're still going through all the day’s events to get an exact total, but it’s looking really good,” he said.
“We're very grateful for what people have contributed to this cause, and we all hope we can make this something special again in the future.”
On the field, it was Echuca getting the bragging rights over South, with 83 from Curtis Townrow guiding the men in green to an eight-wicket win.
“Obviously not the outcome we wanted on the field,” Smith said.
“But it was a day where there was something far bigger involved, so we came away proud of efforts none the less.”
For Hinks, the past weeks have been a reminder that sport is just sport.
“There are so many bigger things to life,” he said.
“But it is still something very special. Sport brings people together, its a way we can unite to help each other, whether its people in our own community or not, and we were lucky to be able to use the game in that way.”
