GV Veterans
Shepparton Golf Club hosted the annual challenge with Central District (Bendigo-based) Veteran Golfers Association to contest for the Tom Downie Shield, on Monday, February 24.
Tom was a member of both associations at different times and contributed much to the competition and collegiality of both before his passing in 2012.
The competition is fierce but great friendships are built in the process.
Both teams had a full field of 60 players registered, which is a great commitment from the travelling members from Castlemaine and Kyneton (160+ km) and not forgetting our own contingent from Deniliquin (140 km).
The course was in excellent condition with beautiful greens that played true to the sloping terrain.
The tee positions were set at the white markers, but with many pin positions at the back of the greens the course did not play easy.
Leading the field for Goulburn Valley were Lindsay Simms, Mooroopna (35); Robert Oliver, Hill Top (34); Rolf Weber, Mooroopna (34); Bernard O’Hare, Nathalia (34); Bill Curnow, Patterson River (33); John Keller, Hill Top (33); David Trickey, Shepparton (33); Ron Wilkinson, Shepparton (33); Gary Bow, Nagambie (32); Vincent Chan, Shepparton (32); Ray Gourlay, Kialla (32); Rob Kilgour, Rich River (32); Neville Larson, Kialla (32); John Mortimer, Shepparton (32).
The championship is decided on the aggregate of the best 40 stableford scores from each team and Central compiled 1174 points, just shy of the GV total of 1222.
Nearest the pin was contested on holes 2, 5 and 12; 127 metres, 147m and 135m respectively.
Rolf Weber (GV) was successful on 2, Neville Winch (GV) on 5 and Gary Moore (GV) on 12.
Next year Central District will be the host, at a venue still to be determined.
Our next regular event will be at Kialla on Monday, March 2, with 8.30am assembly and 9am tee.
