The Rhys Archard-trained horse broke its maiden in January and on Saturday – day two of the Mildura Cup carnival – she picked up the $22,000 ENG Media Big Screen Hire 0-58 Handicap; her second win from 21 starts.
And if you watched the run you would be looking for her next start – anywhere between 2000m and 2400m and preferably on a softish track – to get on board the bandwagon.
For the first 1000m on Saturday, jockey Logan McNeil kept out of trouble by keeping out of the race – stone cold last and well adrift.
But he didn’t panic and 400m later he was still bringing up the rear and if you had put a few betting slips on good old Super Slow you might have already torn them up and thrown them to the wind – just as Logan decided it was time to go.
As they swung around the bend to head for home, Super Quick Love suddenly became another horse. A super quick one.
McNeil steered her through the crowd and in the straight – having gone wider than anyone – took advantage of more clear running to crank it up even further.
Virtually flying by the 200m, McNeil and SQL simply blew right by the also-rans to be more than two lengths clear when they sailed past the post.
Insisting he had never been too fussed about his mare’s positioning early on, Archard praised McNeil’s smarts throughout the race.
“That’s sort of her general racing pattern; the plan wasn’t to go back to last but circumstance prevailed and that’s where we ended up,” Archard said.
“Young Logan used his head and thought he’d follow Harry Coffey, who was probably the best jockey there, and made the right move, tracking him through the race, and it paid off in the end.”
After a couple of middling performances on heavy tracks in recent weeks, a Soft 6 at Mildura for her third start this month proved to be perfect conditions for the mare, according to Archard.
“I don't think she likes it really heavy,” he said.
“It had the perfect amount of give for her, and slowed some of the other horses down, and she seems to get through it really well.”
Coming back from a three-week freshener in June, SQL appeared to be running into some form on some very heavy tracks.
“She was desperately unlucky her first couple starts this time in, but it all boded well for a good prep we thought,” Archard said.
“At Echuca she ran a fourth, third up, on a really heavy track that didn't quite suit her, but she still ran well.
“Training her up and backing it up a week later at Ballarat, she was probably still feeling the run at Echuca a bit; so we put a line through that.
“We gave her an easy couple of weeks and she freshened up well to be her true self yesterday.”
Archard said he would now look at similar races for the mare in the coming weeks.
“We'll probably head back to Mildura and when you look at the way she won, she could keep progressing through the grades.”
On Sunday, Archard was back on track at Warracknabeal with Honeywine, the seven-year-old gelding finishing fourth in the 0-58 Handicap over 1610m.
