The 19-year-old will take part in Rebellion Muay Thai’s Roots 18: Kaya at the Melbourne Pavilion in Kensington on Saturday.
The unique contest will see eight competitors face off in three rounds of fights, with each bout consisting of three three-minute rounds.
The loser is eliminated, with the winner advancing to the next round until just one person is left.
The format means Matthews could potentially fight three times in the one night, a colossal test both physically and mentally.
Matthews said he was feeling ready for the occasion.
“I’m feeling pretty good, I have started weight cutting, I have to shave off a couple of kilos and then I’m ready to fight,” Matthews said.
It will be the first time Matthews has taken part in an eliminator, with the format posing some different challenges to a standard fight.
With the possibility of three fights on the night, Matthews said the first bout would be the key.
“I think the first fight will be the toughest, and then the other ones after that will be easier once the nerves calm down,” he said.
“It’s more mental than anything. I feel like I’m conditioned pretty well physically.
“I’m expecting it to be like any other fight, just a bit more intense.“
The winner on the night will walk away with the Roots Eliminator belt as well as a spot in the next Rebellion Muay Thai event.
Matthews said his training routine in the lead up to the event had been more intense than usual.
“It has been a similar routine, but harder and more of it,” he said.
“It’s been more focused on stamina. Smashing out pads, sparring, clinching, just doing a bit everything.
“I’ve been running twice a day, hitting pads at least once a day, kicking pads, everything like that.”
Matthews trains at Wickham’s Martial Arts Centre in Echuca under renowned coach Kiw Eikkasit.
Saturday’s first-round bout will be Matthews’ fifth fight of his professional career.
He made his debut last year, winning his inaugural fight by unanimous decision.
He is 2-2 in his career overall, losing his last fight in April in a tight split decision.
