At the daily briefing on Wednesday, September 23, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said he could not identify a date as to when they would become recommended and not mandatory.
That's despite the number of COVID-19 cases continuing to drop across the state.
“Masks are very, very important and we won’t lightly change those settings,” he said.
“It’s a small impost again, not necessarily the most pleasant experience but (important) in terms of the benefit that it gives you.
“If I might give one example, you look at Sydney, they’re currently chasing all manner of passengers, all manner of passengers from one ... taxi driver. (The driver worked for several days while potentially infectious.)
“Masks are very important and that example gives you one example of that.
“We won’t lightly change those rules despite some of the absolute nonsense — and that’s all it is — about encroaching on people’s civil liberties and human rights. Wearing a mask is not too much to ask Victorians to do and I’m so proud that they are.
“The nurse treating you in ICU will wear a mask and it’s not too much for you to do the same to not contribute to more people in hospitals.”
The NSW Government recommends face coverings in situations where social distancing may not be possible.
