Farmers in the southern Murray-Darling Basin can apply to purchase water at a discounted rate from 10am today.
Eligible farmers can buy up to two 50Ml parcels at $100 per megalitre and Federal Water and Drought Minister David Littleproud said the water would help support farmers in basin communities facing tough decisions about crops and livestock.
“The water can only be used to grow much-needed fodder, pasture and silage,” Mr Littleproud said.
“This will make a real difference to farmers trying to protect important breeding stock.
“It will also help them through the drought so they can get back on their feet faster once it rains.
Mr Littleproud said a pool of 40Gl is available in 2019/20 for use before June 30 next year.
The remaining 60Gl of the pool will be available in 2020/21.
“I urge farmers to check their eligibility through the guidelines which can be found online," Mr Littleproud said.
