Field Day to showcase local research

Grain growers and advisors are invited to the Riverine Plains Inc and FAR Australia Spring Field Day to be held at the Riverine Research Centre, Yarrawonga, on Tuesday, September 24. 

Riverine Plains Inc Chairman, Ian Trevethan said the Riverine Research Centre was host to a range of trials and that the field day is an opportunity for growers to see the local research being conducted at the site, as well as hear about other issues of importance to the industry. 

“Local trials are important because they provide data and information which are relevant to our own local environment,” Ian said. 

“For example, growers in the Riverine Plains region have increasingly been looking to longer season cereals to spread risk and increase diversification. Multiple trials have now been established at the Riverine Research Centre looking at the local performance of winter and spring-type wheats and barleys, with the field day providing an opportunity to see and hear about these trials in more detail.”

One of the trials to be toured at the field day includes the GRDC management of early sown wheat trials, with Kenton Porker (South Australia Research and Development Institute) and Michael Straight (FAR Australia) to outline the major findings from the past three years of work. Kenton will then speak on dual-purpose and longer season barleys. 

Other trials which will be viewed during the Field Day include grazing, sowing rate and nitrogen timing trials, nutrition and disease management and well as aphid observations. 

Kat Fuhrmann (FAR Australia) will also provide a disease resistance update in regards to the SDHI group of fungicides. 

There will also be an interactive panel session dedicated to addressing issues growers might have about the current season. 

The Riverine Research Centre Field Day will run from 9am – 12pm on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, at the Riverine Research Centre, 277 Reilly’s Rd, Yarrawonga, Victoria. Morning tea and lunch will be provided.
