A Melbourne man who made two separate trips to Lake Mulwala for fishing competitions and was charged with offences on both occasions fronted Albury Magistrates Court after he was charged with assaulting police and offensive behaviour after a one-punch attack on a local policeman.
The male was also on a warrant for driving while unlicensed.
The 29-year old was involved in a fight in the foyer of the Mulwala Water Ski Club on December 28 just before midnight when Mulwala Police arrived.
One officer was forced to use capsicum spray to try subdue the fighting duo at which point the offender shoved then punched the officer to the side of the face.
He was put on a 12-month community corrections order, convicted and fined $900 and given a three-month license ban.
Bail granted after horrific assault
A St James man who attended Wangaratta Magistrates Court after he was accused of badly beating his 64-year-old female neighbour has been granted bail due to concerns about him staying in custody during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A 48-year-old male and his son allegedly used a bat and pole to smash a glass sliding door from the patio to enter their neighbours house around midnight on July 20 2019 then allegedly proceeded to assault the victim.
Tensions between the parties began when the family claimed their female neighbour had damaged a tree that was hanging into her property.
Tensions escalated with both parties taking out intervention orders on the other.
On the night of the attack, the two men allegedly broke into the home then hit the victim in the back with the weapons before also hitting her on the legs and ankles while she was curled up in a ball on the floor.
With what was later confirmed by Royal Melbourne Hospital as a collapsed lung, shattered spleen (which consequently had to be removed), four broken fingers, smashed knuckles, a broken ankle and ribs on the left side, the victim managed to escape the home, crawling to her car and fleeing to a friends home who then rendered assistance and contacted the emergency services.
The victim spent 14 days in hospital with four of those in the intensive care unit.
The younger of the duo admitted to his role in the attack while the father pleaded not guilty.
The magistrate granted bail with conditions the accused provide a $50,000 surety, report to police three times a week, live in Mooroopna with a curfew between 6pm and 9am and not consume drugs or alcohol.
The case was adjourned until the court’s distancing restrictions are lifted.
