The Yarrawonga Mulwala A Grade have cemented their position on the WDCA A Grade ladder with a 29-run victory against Beechworth at Baarmutha Park in Beechworth.

With Matt McCabe and Reid Clarke facing the opening of day 2, the pair were able to add 14 runs in difficult condition with a thick outfield coupled with tight bowling.
McCabe was out in the second over of the day LBW for 6. Matt Casey joined Captain Reid Clarke at the crease adding 36 before Casey was out for 19 and just five runs later Clarke was out for 28 from 134 balls in a great Captains knock that involved patience in difficult conditions.
Harry Wheeler produced a brilliant innings batting through the innings to get the YMCC past Beechworth’s score and secure the victory.
The total was passed with the loss of 7 wickets, with Wheeler the last batsman dismissed for an excellent 43 runs and the YMCC complied 117 from 76 overs.

Currently Yarrawonga Mulwala are 1st on the ladder with Ovens Valley in a three-way battle to secure a finals spot.
Ironically, the YMCC could play Ovens Valley in the first week of finals at the same venue in 3 weeks’ time.
A Reserve fall short in one day final
The YMCC A Reserve have fallen short in their quest for the Brian Fisher Shield - A Reserve One Day Final against Rutherglen United at Lonsdale Reserve in Mulwala.
Rutherglen batted first and made 7 for 157. Man of the Match from Rutherglen United was Adam McLennan who made 73 not out and took 4 for 15.
Brady Bartlett with 4 for 19 off 8 overs was Yarrawonga Mulwala’s leading wicket taker. Brendan Lewis took 1 for 28 off 8; Rory Bartlett 1 for 29 off 8 and Ned Mullins 1 for 28 off 5.
Yarrawonga started their innings and in the second over lost the opening wicket with Zach Moore dismissed for 4.

Ned Mullins batted well scoring a team high 29 runs while Jacob Bartlett scored 24 and Bailey Frauenfelder scored a quickfire 18 but in the end Yarrawonga Mulwala could only muster 129 runs to go down by 28 runs in a great cricket showcase by both team.

After making 167 on Day 1 at Lonsdale Reserve in Mulwala, Day 2 saw the YMCC take to the bowling crease and proceed to skittle the Beechworth team for just 21 securing a 146 run victory. B Grade
B Grade travelled to Wangaratta to take on the Wang Magpies in round 16. It was a vastly different team this week with 4 players from the previous week unavailable.
But, thanks to David and Tyler True playing their first games in B Grade this season and Jason Montgomery playing his first game for the club with son Geoff, the club managed to get a side on the park.
Captain Gary Browning won the toss and elected to bowl. Without the usual openers, Browning turned to promising youngster Ben Kennedy to take the new pill whilst the Captain partnered him from the other end.
Browning was the first to strike with the score on 12. Things were looking promising for the Lakers, but experienced campaigners for the Wang Magpies calmed things down and put together a good partnership.
Lach Elliott was to take the next wicket some 70 runs later with a tough caught and bowled effort. Ben Irvine then chimed in with two wickets in the 25th and 27th overs.
But it was the Magpies Captain and opener Luke Sims who was the thorn in the Lakers side. He managed an excellent 103 retired, out of the Magpies 4/147.
The Lakers using eight bowlers Ben Irvine 2/36 from 6, Gary Browning again miserly 1/8 from 7 and Lach Elliott 1/23 from 8 were the wicket takers.
With the Lakers requiring 148 to win they would need to make sure they valued their wickets and put partnerships together to get the win. That is what they did, the opening pair of Justin O’Brien and Ben Irvine put on 46 in 9 overs to get away to a good start before O’Brien went for 17.
Several partnerships of around the 20-run mark were a great improvement on recent weeks for the Lakers as they steadily made their way towards the total. Ben Irvine made a hard hitting 54.
At 5/106 in the 25th over there was a question mark as to whether the Lakers could get the win. Hudson Gillies came to the fore being the backbone of the innings, with smart cricket his placement and shot selection was superb.
Gillies getting the Lakers across the line with a fine 51 not out, his highest score at senior level. The Lakers reaching the target of 148 in the 34th over and going on to make 6/163 from the allotted 36 overs.
A well fought out win by the Lakers with two tough games against fellow top four sides
to finish the home and away games, hopefully the Lakers can roll into a finals campaign with some good momentum.
C Grade
The Yarrawonga Mulwala C Grade have further cemented their place at the top of the WDCA C Grade ladder with a 92-run victory against Gapsted at Victoria Park Number 2 in Yarrawonga.
The Lakers compiled 6 for 230 off their 36 overs allotment while holding a pluck Gapsted to 7 for 138.
The YMCC had a 61 run opening partnership before Rocky Leith was dismissed for 20 and Peter Brear 38. At 3 for 80 Steve Lappin and Adam Dodd produced the match winning score with Lappin making 74 and Dodd 70 in a team score of 230.
Young guns Hunter Frauenfelder and Austin Willett ended the innings with 9 not out and 3 not out respectively.
With the ball the Lakers toiled early, with Gapsted producing an opening partnership of 64 between OAKFM football legend Ian Gambold and Newton.
But from there, 7 wickets fell for 74 runs to see the Gapsted Gorillas complete their 36 overs at 7 for 138.
Father – son opening partnership Craig and Hunter Frauenfelder bowled well with Hunter taking 3 for 24 off 8 overs, while Dad Craig had 0 for 22 off 6 overs.
The YMCC Lakers chose to share the bowling around using 9 bowlers. Gun spinner Austin Willett again took wicket with 2 for 15 off 6 overs; Dennis Phibbs 1 for 6 off 2 overs; Ben Pickering 1 for 21 off 5 overs.
YDCA and Mulwala United legend Michael Drake made his debut for the Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club and bowled an over conceding just 7 runs, while Peter Brear rolled the arm over conceding just 1 run from his 1 over.
The YMCC C Grade take on Beechworth at Victoria Park Oval Number 2 against fellow finals hopeful in the penultimate round of C Grade action.
