“The club has spoken with WDCA President Michael Hurley and was told the committee would make a decision on the season then,” Lakers president Terry Brear told the Yarrawonga Chronicle last Friday.
“Personally, my view is that they would take the lead of Cricket Australia and the States and award the premiership to the home and away series, thus giving the flags to Yarrawonga Mulwala A & A Reserve.
“Premier Cricket in Melbourne has just announced their premiers and have followed this precedent.”
Mr Brear said the Lakers were the best side throughout the year and finished top of the ladder.
“Mother nature has impacted on the season, no different to weather conditions playing a part, so this is the decision that needs to be made,” he said.
The president praised the performances of first year coach Brendan Lewis and senior club captain Reid Clarke.
“They need to be applauded for their dedication and hard work both on and off the field to making us one of the powerhouse clubs in the WDCA,” Mr Brear said.
“We have only been in the league ten or so years and have had an immediate impact; we respect all other clubs in the league but fear none.
“Our A Reserve has won the last six premierships in their division, our Bs finished second, Cs second and our Under 14s and 16s played off but were unfortunately beaten the weekend before last.”
Junior co-ordinator Allister Mitchell was also praised by the president. “Allister has worked tirelessly with the juniors from our Blasters to our Under 16s and promoting them through the ranks to senior cricket,” Mr Brear said.
Since joining WDCA in 2009 Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club has won 13 premiership titles across all age groups and open age cricket.
“It’s an effort we are extremely proud of,” the president said. “We believe we have contributed greatly to the WDCA, we have transformed our club and put structures in place and are moving forward and developing our juniors; have plans in place that will hopefully come to fruition in the near future for the playing, viewing and training facilities.”
Representative wise, the Lakers were well served with star A Grade batsman Matt Casey captaining Vic Country Under 21s which included local teammate and medium fast bowler Will Sharp, who has only just turned 18.
Reid Clarke led the WDCA senior representative side at Bendigo Country Week alongside Angus McMillan, Matt Casey and Corey McIntosh as well as a host of juniors who also representing WDCA, North East Knights and Vic Country.
“On behalf of the Yarrawonga Mulwala Lakers Cricket Club we wish to thank all of our sponsors, YMCC players, coaches, club officials, umpires, scorers, parents and volunteers for their commitment and time through what has been a productive but at times difficult season,” Mr Brear said.
“There have been many challenges involving weather and the ability to prepare grounds, but our key community challenge now is supporting each other as we come to terms with the realities of COVID-19 Coronavirus and what it means for the months ahead.”
