On a usual day, the facility would be full to cat-pacity and have a number dogs waiting for their forever homes, but times have changed.
“Since being considered a pandemic on March 12, we have seen 112 dogs and cats adopted,” Campaspe Animal Shelter operations manager Kate Kemp said.
“Compared to this time last year, that's 37 more and although it doesn't sound like many, it is for us.”
This rise could be attributed to the lockdown Victorians are facing at the moment.
“It could be because people are spending more time at home and therefore need a companion during what could be a lonely time for them,” she said.
While there are less meows and barks coming from the adoption rooms at the moment, locals don't need to fear they will miss out on mission their furry soulmate.
“We still have a number of animals waiting on surgery before they can come up for adoption,” Kate said.
But you'd better be quick if you're in the market.
“People see the pets on our website or on Facebook and are straight on the phone requesting a visit,” she said.
“We also have a waiting list of people who are currently looking and as soon as a dog or cat comes in that fits their needs, they're gone,
“They don't even make it out into the public eye.”
While the team are happy to see their friends go off to their next chapter of their lives, they want to remind people of the commitment they're making.
“We always remind people that these pets they're taking home are forever,” Kate said.
“We're hoping we don't see too many of the cats and dogs coming back after the pandemic.”
All services are still offered at the shelter, but people are reminded to contact the Shelter first instead of dropping in.
“People will need to ring ahead of time for any questions and appointments need to be made before they can come in,” she said.
