"We're appealing for motorists who saw the crash and particularly a light-coloured dual cab ute that was at the scene soon after the crash but didn't stay," Sergeant Paul Nicoll of Campaspe Highway Patrol said.
"We'd like to speak to the driver of that vehicle. I would encourage them to contact Senior Constable Eva Christou from Campaspe Highway Patrol by calling 5483 1500."
The Echuca-Kyabram Rd road has now re-opened.
EARLIER (9am): ECHUCA police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash in Strathallan this morning.
It is believed a man was driving east on Echuca-Kyabram Rd when he lost control and struck a tree about 6.15am.
"The vehicle has caught fire and the driver has died as a result," Sergeant Paul Nicoll of Campaspe Highway Patrol said.
The sole occupant of the vehicle is yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be a 52-year-old man from the Echuca area.
The exact circumstances of the crash are unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
"Crime scene has arrived and are examining the scene," Sgt Nicoll said.

The road is closed at McKenzie and Simmie roads.
EARLIER (8am): A MAN has been killed in a crash at Strathallan.
Emergency services were called to a rescue road trap at the corner of McKenzie and Simmie roads about 7.05am.
It is unknown how many cars are involved or if there are any other injuries.
Motorists are being urged to avoid the area.
