The two fierce rivals went hammer and tong for 90 minutes at McEwen Reserve, only to settle for a gritty 2-2 draw.
The outcome now leaves South locked in fifth spot — four points behind fourth — while United is two placings below in seventh.
Although the points were shared, draws often leave one side feeling relieved and one ruing its chances.
And that was the scene as the referee blew time at the end of the round eight encounter.
United was left wondering what could have been after it gained a 2-0 lead in the 26th minute following an own goal.
Maria Villani had already gifted her side the lead when she found the back of the net for the 14th time this campaign in the 20th minute.
The Blues were well on their way to clinching their seventh win of the season until South's skilful attacker Alicia Rowan entered the fray.
South's leading goal-scorer breathed life into the match when she beat the keeper with a strike in the 29th minute.
The scores were back on level pegging once Elisha Antunov popped up with a goal less than 10 minutes later.
That would be the final goal of the match, with the two outfits unable to find a winner in the second half.
In the remaining matches, a classy brace from Gabriela Posteraro has steered Tatura to its second win of the campaign.
Tatura prevailed 2-1 over Golden City in a stirring road win.
Pesteraro, after granting her side the lead inside 15 minutes of play, scored the winner in the 69th minute.
The Tatura talent now has five goals for the season.
Looking ahead to next week, Tatura returns home for a date against Moama-Echuca Border Raiders.
