As a member of the Echuca Moama Triathlon Club, there is nothing Davy enjoys more than seeing new people try something new or someone improve out of sight across a season.
But he’s never really been interested in getting a pat on the back for his own work in his six years with the club.
Although, Davy didn’t have a choice when he was named Triathlon Victoria’s Volunteer of the Year on Wednesday, November 25.
Davy was presented the award during the state governing body’s annual general meeting (AGM).
“It was unexpected because I didn’t even know I had been nominated,” he said.
“I received an email the other day asking me to be part of the AGM and I was a little shocked.
“As a committee member and the current secretary, I had been attending what Triathlon Victoria were calling ‘coffee table discussions’ about what was happening in terms of the return to sport protocols.
“You don’t give up your time to be recognised, you do it for the love of the sport.
“I think I’ve been successful in my role if I see someone else enjoying what they’re doing.
“I’d like to thank my wife, family and other committee members for all their support because I couldn’t do the things I love without them.”
Davy admits he isn’t part of the club to go onto larger events such as a half-Ironman.
Instead, he is happy to continue training on a Wednesday night at Winbi Resort.
“I always look forward to catching up with everyone,” he said.
“I love the club atmosphere and the culture which has been developed because it makes me want to keep coming back.
“Being able to get a session over in an hour to 90 minutes is something that appeals to me and that’s why I’m not looking to go too big.
“I’m also a member of the Echuca Moama Mountain Bike Club and we go for regular rides.
“I think we’re very fortunate to have a lot of great clubs, no matter their size, in this community.”
Echuca Moama Triathlon Club president Steve Loader congratulated Davy in a Facebook post.
“There are no words that will do justice to what this guy has done and continues to do for EMTC,” it said.
“I know he has basically carried me as president for the last couple of years. He epitomises everything that is our club.
“(He is) a brilliant operator and one of the most humble blokes you will ever meet.
“Always trying to make the place better and a safer and fun environment for everyone.
“Triathlon Victoria rightly have judged him Volunteer of the Year at their virtual awards.
“Well done Mick, our committee and club thanks and salutes you.”
