The sun broke through on a potentially dismal Good Friday as more than 100 people from Echuca-Moama’s Christian churches took part in the community’s annual ‘Walk of Witness’.

A long-established tradition now, the walk includes 14 thematic stops as the crowd begins at the Uniting Church in Hare St, makes its way to the Anglican Church in High St, across to the Catholic Church in Hare St and finishes where it started.
The stops depict aspects of Jesus’s arrest, trial, crucifixion and burial, as worshippers hear passages of scripture read, join in prayer and sing hymns.

At the conclusion, Father Novelito Lim from St Mary’s Catholic Church offered a reflection on the significance of Christ’s death and how it called for a response from each and every one of us.
At each stage of the journey, different people carried the cross through the streets as a reminder of Jesus’s final trek to the hill named ‘Golgotha’ where he was crucified.
Baptist Pastor Donovan Jasper led the singing while the Rev Phil Zamagias from Christ Church Anglican was the event’s MC.
Afterwards, the Rev Michele Lees and the people of Echuca-Moama Uniting Church treated everyone to their warm hospitality, which included hot cross buns donated by Woolworths Moama and Coles Echuca.

The Uniting church hall was full of people not only from the local churches but visitors from interstate and even overseas were seen enjoying a cuppa and a chat.
The Rev Peter Johnson, a retired Anglican minister from Sydney, and his wife, Jenny, were glad to have been present this Easter.
“It was a great blessing to see how the churches here work together to bring the good news of Jesus to the community in word and deed,” Rev Johnson said.
Planning for next year’s Walk of Witness is already under way.
