But by the end of the game, the Mounts sent a reminder as to why they’re widely tipped to challenge for the flag again, brushing the Bombers aside to the tune of 96 points.
Leitchville-Gunbower went step-for-step against the Mounts in the early stages of the clash, heading into quarter-time 4.2 (26) to 4.3 (27), but the remaining three quarters bore no resemblance to the first-term arm wrestle.
Mount Pleasant booted seven second-quarter goals to the Bombers’ one, holding a 37-point buffer at the main break before piling on six more in the third term put the result beyond doubt.
After managing four goals in the first term the Bombers could only muster four in the remaining three quarters as the Mounts ran away with a 23.14 (152) to 8.8 (56) triumph.
Ben Weightman was the star of the show with 10 goals, while Chris Horman booted four for the visitors.
Ruckman Jobee Warde was once again one of the stars for Leitchville-Gunbower in defeat while Dylan Jardine, Jye Keath, and Nathan McLellan all battled hard.
Adam Baird, Chris Down and Riley McNamara earned a place in the Mounts best alongside Weightman.
The loss comes after 25-point defeat to Elmore in round three, and the Bombers’ search for their first win of the season doesn’t get any easier this weekend.
They will welcome reigning premiers Lockington-Bamawm to Leitchville Reserve and will be hoping for a big upset to help them climb out of eighth spot.
The Bombers reserves were also on the end of a big defeat, beaten 37-110.
The under-18 clash was a tighter affair, with the Mounts staging a late comeback to claim a nine-point win.
Around the league, North Bendigo was 99-point winner over last-placed Huntly, while White Hills flexed its muscle with a 78-point win over Elmore.
