Lockington
Saturday was club championship grand final day. With damp conditions underfoot, it proved to be a good test for all golfers.
Keeping his best round for the grand final, Grant Humbert won his 23rd club champion title, with rounds of 74-76-72=222, a hard-fought right-shot margin over Mat Dennis (79-77-74=230) with Brett Stone (76-81-75=232) two shots back in third.
B grade proved to be the nail-biter of the day. Jeff Carnie led by three shots at the start of the day, but Ian Maddison began better and they were level after five.
Carnie recovered and with a fine chip-in birdie on the 7th, stretched the lead to five after eight, though Maddison would not be denied and fought back with scores tied again after 13.
Carnie regained the lead briefly, but again Maddison came back to level after 16. Carnie kept his cool and parred the last two holes which Maddison bogeyed, and the title was Carnie's by two shots with scores of 87-91-89=267, ahead of Maddison's 89-92-88=269. Will Hardess and Darren Carnie tied for third on 281, 12 shots back.
JD Wright led C grade by three shots at the start of the day. Tom Scurrah began well and cut the margin to just one after three holes, but Wright responded and surged to a seven-shot lead after nine.
Scurrah fought back again and cut the deficit back to two after 13, but Wright settled and captured the title with his rounds of 96-98-100=294. Scurrah was runner-up with 100-97-101=298, with Des Pentreath third on 312.
Despite starting the round 10 shots off the lead for the A grade nett title, Mat Dennis returned a brilliant 67 to finish with 73-71-67=211 to win by three shots from James Hodgens (77-69-68=214) and Andy Freemantle (73-61-80=214).
The B grade nett title was won by Ian Maddison with a solid 71-74-70=215 to hold on by four shots from the fast-finishing Will Hardess (75-74-70=219) with Ron Dixon and Darren Carnie tied for third on 223.
Des Pentreath was the "shocked-but delighted" winner of the C grade nett title with his scores of 73-71-83=227 to win by four shots from Tom Scurrah (77-75-79=231), with Tony Brooke next best on 240.
The result of the veterans championship was a bit of a surprise, with Ian Maddison (71-74-70=215) surging from five shots off the lead to ultimately win by three shots from Jeff Carnie (70-75-73=218) with Kevin Humbert (71-72-77=220) in third place.
