The Bombers sealed their first win since round 15 last year courtesy of a hard-fought match against Huntly, clinching a 38-32 victory in the round-seven clash at Leitchville.
The Hawks flew to lead at quarter-time, but an inspired performance in the second and third quarters helped the Bombers keep their rivals at arm’s length.
“We’ve been working at it to try and pull together a win,” L-G coach Gemma Angove said.
“We knew Huntly were going to come out strong, we knew they would fight for it, and they certainly did that.
“It’s the first time we can say we played four solid quarters, and that’s what we’ve been aiming for.
“There was a lot of squealing and excitement to finally get one on the board.”
Matilda Candy, 17, was pivotal for Leitchville-Gunbower, though Angove saved credit for the entire squad.
“For a young girl, (Matilda) really stood up when we needed her to, she was super strong and a really good target in attack,” Angove said.
“It was lovely to see her play with such composure for a young girl.
“But it was a real team effort; I can’t single out girls in a win like this.
“Everyone played their part and we needed to because Huntly didn’t make it easy for sure, they came out fighting and obviously wanted to win.”
While it was an exciting win for a young, rebuilding Leitchville-Gunbower side, the Bombers remain at the bottom of the ladder ahead of a challenging encounter against third-placed Colbinabbin (5-1).
