Rochester Golf Club

Des Gallagher returned to form last Wednesday in the Stableford event over the back nine to score 22 points and in a three-way countback for second place Laurie Jackel won from Peter Anderson and Mike Austin, all on 20. Anderson won nearest-the-pin on the short 12 for his great shot to within one metre.

The ladies have welcomed several new players over the past few weeks including Lyn Coulter, Kathy Ryan and Sally Parker, who are also enjoying lessons from Marg Knight. Any ladies interested in learning to play or just getting back into this great game can join Knight on Monday mornings at 10am out at Black Culvert Rd.

Louise Williams nearly won the lot last Friday in the ladies’ Stableford event; Williams was nearest-the-pin on 3,8,12 and 16, missing out on straight drive down 10 to Julie Leahy, and Williams’ 40 points saw her come second to Barbara McCarty, whose 42 points was the best on the day.

Six players decided to run their singles match play round in conjunction with the par event last Saturday. Leigh Hicks defeated Bruce Bryant 1-up, Chris Eeles defeated Richard Feuk 3/2, and Peter Anderson won 2/1 against Ap Kuiper.

Once again Shane Connelly came to the attention of the handicapper by winning the main competition with a great score of +3, Anderson was next best at +1, and Darren White, Des Gallagher and Hicks all finished square with the card. White also won balls for his shots on Rochester's SportsPower fifth and on Rochester Bakery's second shot to 18, Gallagher was nearest on the Willis family 16th hole.

Next Monday is the annual Ces Parsons Memorial Day against our arch-rivals in Lockington. This year the event will be held at the Lockington course, although home-ground advantage usually helps. Last year, Lockinton took home the trophy playing at Rochester.

The club's condolences go to the family of the late Peter Hughes on his recent passing. Hughes was a talented golfer, a long-time supporter, a great storyteller and a wonderful character on and off the golf course.
