Gunbower Recreation Reserve will showcase some of the best talents in the league when the HDFL under-18 representative side tackles a combined Central Murray FL and Golden Rivers FL team in a stand-alone representative football match.
Lockington-Bamawm United’s Tyler Phillips has taken the reins as coach, while Leitchville-Gunbower’s Matt Hawken has jumped aboard as an assistant.
By Phillips’ estimation, it’s been roughly six years since a stand-alone HDFL representative footy clash, and he says it’s an excellent opportunity for up-and-coming stars to gain some exposure in a representative capacity.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a full game against another team, we usually have a gala day,” Phillips said.
“To be able to play what’s essentially two leagues is quite special for the kids who get to do that.
“It’s a great opportunity not just to represent the league, but their clubs as well and show that they can play at a high level.”
This comes one week after the league competed in a gala day against Castlemaine and Macedon football leagues, where the HDFL enjoyed a successful outing.
“We got a lot out of the gala day which was good,” Phillips said.
“It’s not so much about winning as it is about getting the team to gel together nicely.
“That’s why we do this game because they only get two 20-minute games at the gala day, which is only one game for the day.
“Getting another game is just more exposure.”
The team will feature local Heathcote League under-18 stars such as Leitchville-Gunbower quartet Fletcher Ball, Noah Hore, Bryce Barnstable, and Hawley Wells competing on their home turf, while Lockington-Bamawm United’s Cooper Mitchell, Noah Condliffe, Jai Milligan and Finn Palmer will also be seeking to impress.
The first bounce at Gunbower Recreation Reserve (26 Gunbower Island Rd) will take place at 10.30am tomorrow (June 10).
