Rich River Golf Club was the scene as 10 Moama residents became Australian citizens on Tuesday.

Murray River Council Mayor Chris Bilkey was on hand to officially welcome our newest Aussies.

Cr Bilkey presented each of the new citizens with a certificate and a native plant, signifying their new roots in Australia.

“As the mayor, one of my favourite parts of the job is being able to welcome new Australians to the region,” Cr Bilkey said.

Divanne Walker was among the group becoming citizens.

Originally from the Philippines, Divanne has been in Australia for close to a decade and had her good friend Joy in attendance as she was presented her certificate by Cr Bilkey.

“I’ve been living in Australia for nine years. Initially I was attracted to the region by marriage,” Ms Walker said.

“I’m employed by Super Clean in Echuca, where I also work with people who have a disability.

“I love living in a rural setting, as the people are more welcoming. While I like Melbourne, the pace is too fast.

“I have a wonderful life in Echuca Moama as I’m surrounded by friends and everything I need is within walking distance.”

Another of the new Australians was Nelia Torres, also originally from the Philippines, and her daughter Ayessah, 14.

One person who knew exactly what the pair was experiencing was Nelia’s husband and Ayessah’s father Ernesto, who gained his Australian citizenship in 2015.

“I moved to Australia with my husband Ernesto and my daughter Ayessah eight years ago,” Nelia said.

“Today I’m feeling very excited to be Australian citizen. I applied in early 2022, so just over a year ago.”

When asked what Nelia and her family like about living in the twin towns, she gave a candid response.

“The people in Echuca and Moama are very welcoming and friendly,” Nelia said.

The event wrapped up with all the newly minted Aussies enjoying an afternoon tea, provided by Murray River Council.
