A tyre of a truck laden with farm machinery caught fire in Echuca on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services including CFA crews and police were on the scene, near the roundabout of the Northern Hwy and Ogilvie Ave.

The incident occurred about 1pm, with traffic diversions soon put in place around the area.

Echuca CFA Lieutenant Jordan Simpson spoke to The Riv after the small blaze was extinguished.

“The truck driver said he felt a slight wobble and pulled over,” Lt Simpson said.

“It appears the truck tyre had gained too much friction on the road due to the warm weather.

“Fortunately for the truck driver, there were a few passers-by who were able to grab a few extinguishers and help the truck driver extinguish (the fire).”

Leading Senior Constable Corey Holland of Campaspe Highway Patrol shared his insights on what took place.

“We had an oversized vehicle carrying a large agricultural machine. The driver was heading north on the Northern Hwy when the driver observed he had a fire towards the rear of the vehicle,” Lead Snr Cons Holland said.

“As a result, he has pulled over on the side of the road, where the police and the CFA have attended.”

Traffic was impacted for about 45 minutes.
