“I wanted to do it because when Pa was going through it all, it was really hard for him and places were giving him food and all that sort of stuff, but he couldn’t really eat any of it,” she said.
“So I thought of doing bags of goodies that will be useful for him. I put in pens, puzzle books, notebooks, shampoo and conditioner, lip balms, and all sorts of other stuff that’ll just brighten up their day and help them.”
Ms Vickers said she started making these as part of her personal best class at school and then kept the project going after she finished.
“I’ve just continued doing it because the girls have told me that every time they give them out (the patients) just can’t stop smiling,” she said.
“It just brightens my day knowing that I’ve helped someone in the way that I wish someone had helped Pa.”
Ms Vickers said she made the bags over a couple of months and then brought new batches of bags into the ward.
She said if people would like to donate items then she would be more than happy to accept them.
“People should donate things that are actually going to be useful for them, not just food and all that sort of stuff that they can’t really eat,” she said.
“It’s got little game books that they have something to do while they’re waiting for appointments or a notebook so they can write down things the doctors say. It just has things that I think will really brighten up their time.”
