Southern lights dazzle: The aurora captured by our readers

NSW residents also got a glimpse, as well people in parts of Western Australia and Queensland, while Tasmanian and South Australian residents enjoyed the full aurora experience.

Saturday night saw the first solar storm to be categorised as “extreme” since October 2003.

A coronal mass ejection is the result of plasma being released into a solar wind, caused by eruptions on the Sun.

On Earth, these geomagnetic storms light up the sky with 'dancing' or 'waving' colours, especially seen in the Northern Hemisphere’s Aurora Borealis.
