Cutters’ long road continues against Waaia

Facing up to the reigning Picola District Football League champion always looked like a bridge too far for Mathoura’s senior football squad and so it proved in the sides’ round five clash.

The rebuilding Cutters couldn’t get much going at the attacking end at Mathoura Recreation Reserve, while Waaia was unrelenting in its own offensive pressure, piling up a mammoth 58 scoring shots.

The Bombers’ accuracy wouldn’t have pleased the coaching staff, but the side fired through 6.10 in the opening term, Mathoura unable to hit the scoreboard.

The Cutters found its lone major of the game in the second period, Wade Austin making the most of his opportunity to get the host on the board.

After leading by 89 at the half, Waaia continued to find the goals in the third and fourth, finishing with a huge 26.32 (188) to 1.1 (7) win.

Charlie Burrows made the most of the favourable fixture, leading his side with nine goals.

A youthful Cutters side is one of three that have yet to score a win this season.

This Saturday will see Mathoura travel to league newcomer Dookie United, which has won one of its opening three fixtures.
