The Rural Fire Service were called out about 6.30am Friday to a single vehicle accident on the Cobb Highway north of Mathoura.
Mid Murray Zone Superintendent Tony Whitehorn said the Mathoura Brigade crew provided fire cover and assisted with removing debris from the highway after the vehicle struck a kangaroo.
Holy cow, the shops are busy
Lunchtime shoppers were a little startled yesterday when they came across a rather large cow in the car park of the Hardinge St Complex.
One local came almost nose to nose with the cow with their car when trying to exit the complex onto Hardinge St.
It’s unclear where the large black cow came from and how it came to be there, but Talkback correspondents say they later saw someone with a horse trailer pulling up at the car park - perhaps in an effort to wrangle it.
Farmers’ Market this Saturday
The Naponda Market, held every second Saturday of the month, will be back this weekend for locals and visitors alike to peruse all kinds of goods and foods.
If its a local food vendor or business you are looking for, then look no further, as the Naponda Farmers Market off that and more.
This could include the array of fresh produce that can be purchased at the market.
Even if it’s giftware you’re searching for, that market has you covered.
It’s exploring weather
While more of us have been reaching for the jumpers in the past few weeks, this time between summer and winter is truly a magical time in Deni and district.
The weather is still warm enough to enjoy outdoor activities, but cool enough that you’re not sweltering while doing so.
The weekend offered the perfect blend of conditions, with cooler but sunny days providing a beautiful backdrop to explore.
The parks are being used by families, including the Werrpanakata Fish Park where people were seen set up with camp chairs, a fishing rod and what looked like a small picnic.
The Beach to Beach Walk was another popular hot spot - and not just for the weekly Saturday morning parkrun.
And there were a few boats out too - small fishing boats and small barges.
A Talkback correspondent even saw, in the distance, a swimmer in the Edward River on Sunday.
The one note our Talkback correspondent has, however, is regarding shared use of the Beach to Beach path.
Cyclists coming up behind walkers - especially those with dogs on leads - should indicate their presence by dinging their bell.
It would eliminate either walker or animal being startled, and a potential tangling of bike and dog lead.
River dropping
Speaking of the Edward River, it’s been noted that the river levels are starting to drop.
It’s visible from even high vantage points, but also by the growing edge of mud at the water’s edge.
The water is also looking a little more green than brown these days.
According to Water NSW reports, the river levels are dropping 1cm to 2cm per day.
It was sitting at 1.83m at the time of going to print yesterday.
An amber alert has been in place for the Edward River at Deniliquin from the last six tests.
At amber alert levels, blue-green algae may be multiplying in numbers.
The water may have a green tinge and a musty or organic odour and should be considered as unsuitable for potable use and alternative supplies or prior treatment of raw water for domestic purposes should be considered.
The water may also be unsuitable for stock watering.
The water remains suitable for use, however algal concentrations can change rapidly. Use caution and avoid water where signs of blue-green algae present.
