The day kicked off with a presentation from ex-AFL premiership player Tom Boyd to the two masters clubs, which was warmly received, raising awareness for men's mental health and general wellbeing.
A special thank you to Lockington Football Netball Club for the opportunity to participate.
It was a frenetic start to the game in the over-45s with both teams having numerous looks into the forward line, but it was Surf Coast that capitalised early, putting on a few goals.
The Emus, with six new players, started to gel and put through a couple of goals of their own which tightened up the game.
Les Butler wound back the clock with a nice goal, showing his three sons who were in attendance that he still has it.
New player Daniel Flemming also slotted one home making his debut game a memorable experience.
Brett Henson and Mark Van Poeteren also got in on the action, kicking one each.
The Mitchell brothers, Dean and Corey, were dominant throughout with Dean being recognised as the best player, voted by the opposition.
Overall it was a 24-point victory for Surf Coast.
The 35s game was next, with Surf Coast showing their quick ball movement and precision kicking to get the early jump and put on five quick goals.
In true EMU spirit, the boys rallied and started the second quarter linking up with accurate disposal by foot and hand.
The third quarter saw the EMUs continue with confidence and drive, reducing the margin to five goals at three-quarter time.
The Emus kicked the first of the last quarter, and it was game on.
Surf Coast though steadied the ship, kicking a few of their own after this, running away with the win.
Clint Jurey was a focal point up forward, finishing with three goals for the night.
Jon Beach kicked another nice set-shot goal, this time from 11m out, only to find himself being subbed for over-celebrating.
Brett Marchant also kicked a nice set-shot goal from 14.75m out with plenty of advice coming over the fence from the Lockington faithful.
The Emus’ backline worked hard all night, led by Tanner Christie and Craig Danswan.
Our midfield led by Gary Davis, Troy Ramsay and Josh Hunter battled hard all night, setting up many forward-50 entries.
The Emus train every Wednesday night from 6pm at Echuca South oval. All players turning 35 this year or who are over 35 are eligible to play. The Emus are affiliated with the Vic Country Masters.
