John Moore, who has been volunteering at the facility for five years, assists with multiple tasks including gardening, deliveries and general support.
“I was looking for something to do and I called in there and I spoke to this particular lady and indicated that I was interested in giving assistance somewhere,” Mr Moore said.
“I do bits (and pieces) three or four days a week and when the place is closed on holidays, I do a bit of fill-in watering and gardening,” he said.
His rewarding duties involve nurturing the community garden through weeding and assisting locals in harvesting fresh, homegrown fruit and vegetables, fostering a sense of shared accomplishment.
“Volunteering is what you make it,” Mr Moore said.
“I quite enjoy it, otherwise I wouldn't be doing it. I enjoy meeting the people who come in to get assistance.”
Echuca Neighbourhood House is actively recruiting volunteers for a diverse range of fulfilling roles, from welcoming visitors at reception and supporting the vital Foodbank initiative, to maintaining the beautiful gardens and assisting at the scenic Echuca Back 9 golf course.
It is advised that if people would like to volunteer with Foodbank, some heavy lifting is involved.
The organisation offers plenty of benefits to volunteers including administrative experience, improved computer literacy, professional references and flexible working hours.
Echuca Neighbourhood House operates Monday to Thursday, from 9.30am to 2.30pm.
Those interested in volunteering can visit during opening hours or call 03 5482 6914. Further information about Echuca Neighbourhood House's activities and programs can be found at www.enh.org.au
