The Moama export is set to make his AFL debut for the West Coast Eagles this Saturday at Marvel Stadium, as his side takes on the league leader, Collingwood.
The club revealed the move on Wednesday night on its official website, coach Andrew McQualter calling Shanahan “a really talented player”.
“At times he can look a little bit laconic, but he’s a really good competitor Jobe, so we’ve liked that in his game,” McQualter said.
Shanahan is expected to make his debut in defence after making the switch from up front with the Eagles’ WAFL club during the season.
Shanahan’s last two WAFL games were his best of the year and led to his selection, the former Bendigo Pioneer dishing 37 disposals and taking 13 marks across those two appearances.
“I’ve been working hard with the coaches on my craft and physicality. I’ve taken a lot from that and will continue to learn,” Shanahan said.
“I came here as a key forward, but I’ve now learned the backline craft, which gives me insight into what my defender will be doing, which has really helped my development.”
Shanahan was widely regarded as a steal for the Eagles in the 2024 AFL draft, sliding to pick 30.
He was an All-Australian prospect at the under-18 National Championships and put in strong performances for the Bendigo Pioneers and Essendon’s VFL side throughout his draft year.
With the Eagles visiting Marvel Stadium, Shanahan’s friends and family will have an easier time supporting him from the stands in his first top-level clash.
It will be a challenging opening outing for West Coast’s 302nd debutant, as the last-placed Eagles face a fearsome Collingwood side.
First bounce of Shanahan’s AFL debut is set for 7.35pm on Saturday.
