It’s not Toogood to be true — Mansfield product Bonnie Toogood will once again co-captain Essendon.

The 27-year-old has been reappointed as co-captain for a fourth season, spearheading the Bombers’ troops since their AFLW inception in 2022 (season 7).

In that time, Toogood, alongside co-captain Steph Cain, has taken Essendon to back-to-back finals campaigns in 2023 and 2024, with Toogood earning maiden All-Australian honours in 2023.

The 2018 premiership Bulldog has also been the leading goal-kicker at both clubs, taking the title at the Bulldogs in 2022 (season 6) and in her All-Australian year at Essendon.

With lofty ambitions still on the table, Essendon has backed in the Mansfield star to lead it to another finals campaign this season.

Toogood said it was “an honour” to be given leadership responsibilities again.

“To be a co-captain with Caino again is an honour and I feel extremely grateful for the opportunity,” Toogood said.

“Our different leadership styles complement one another and we really support each other in our roles.

“Leading this group in some ways is an easy job, as they all take ownership of their leadership.

“I recently saw a quote from Marcus Bontempelli that said, ‘Having captaincy is rented time’, which really stuck with me.

“I’m honoured to be co-captain again, but being surrounded by so many strong leaders makes me super excited to see who will take the reins one day.”

Essendon’s AFLW coach Natalie Wood was full of praise for Toogood, reflecting on her and Cain’s growth in the role since they first took the reins of the playing group.

“To have Bonnie Toogood and Steph Cain lead the side as co-captains for the fourth consecutive season is incredible and is a testament to their evolution as leaders,” Wood said.

“They are passionate leaders who lead from the front with passion, empathy and set the standard for work ethic and commitment.

“They inspire the entire playing group.”

Toogood’s AFLW campaign kicks off on Saturday, August 16, when the Bombers travel interstate to take on GWS in round 1.
