After breaking out with two straight wins Mathoura nearly made it three in Picola District Netball League.
In a see-sawing encounter the Timbercutters came within a handful of goals of toppling Jerilderie, but were ultimately toppled by four, 46-42.
Jerilderie had the best of the first half, grabbing a small lead after the first term and extending it to seven by half-time.
Mathoura came roaring back after the break to get to within three at the final change, but the Demons did enough to hang on for the win.
The Cutters visit league-leader Deniliquin Rovers in the penultimate round on Saturday.
Picola United also had a competitive game in round 16, but came up short against Strathmerton.
The margin hovered in the 5-8 range for most of the game and, while the Blues had some good periods of play, the Bulldogs did enough to win by eight goals, 32-24.
In the midst of a losing streak, a match-up with Katunga (10-1-2) this weekend does Picola no favours.
