However, thanks to a dominant showing against Barooga in round 17, Moama is currently sitting in fifth and safe for now.
Travelling to Barooga Recreation Reserve, the A-grade Magpies made a good account of themselves in the first quarter, putting 12 through the net while limiting the Hawks to five.
Moama’s defence, led by Abby Larkin, almost completely shut down Barooga’s efforts inside the goal circle, adding one to the tally in the lead up to half-time.
Meanwhile, the Magpies’ attacking unit generated 21 goals in the second period to turn its decent lead into a heavy advantage.
While the Hawks got back on the goal-scoring horse after half-time, tallying five, it paled in comparison to Moama’s 14-goal performance in the third quarter, the lead now at 36 and virtually unbeatable.
Twenty-one goals down the stretch iced the game for the Magpies and proved to be a good percentage-boosting effort, with Barooga settling for six goals to finish its day.
The final score was 68-17.
Whether Moama is destined for the finals will come down to the final game of the season against Numurkah, which currently sits in sixth on the same record as the Magpies (9-7).
If Moama wins against the Blues, it’ll be an automatic entry into the finals and a potential top-four finish depending on other results.
If the Magpies lose they’ll be at risk of getting leapfrogged by Deniliquin, which plays Echuca United in the last round, and would fall out of the finals race completely.
