Eagles fly to the finish

Echuca United has ended its 2025 campaign with confidence, scoring a second straight banner win in Murray Football League.

The Eagles got the best of Deniliquin at the weekend, picking up a 45-point win at Echuca South Recreation Reserve.

The Rams were narrowly on top after the first term, leading by two minor scores, but United quickly turned the scoreline around in the second.

The first two majors of the period and a barrage of behinds gave the Eagles the lead, while they defensively stifled Deni.

The Rams went goalless in the second as Echuca United rushed to a 16-point lead.

The Eagles refused to let up after the main break, showing season-best offensive form as they kicked six unanswered in the third.

The lead was beyond 60 points in the fourth before Deniliquin restored some respectability late for a final score of United, 14.13 (97) to Deniliquin, 7.10 (52).

Anthony McMahon and coach Scott Beattie shared top scoring honours with three majors each for the Eagles.

Finishing the year with two wins over quality sides improves Echuca United to eighth on the final table with a record of 6-12.

After winning a single game in 2024, the Eagles were much more competitive in 2025, and finished the season going toe-to-toe with sides above them on the table.

It’s a positive trajectory for United, which will hope another off-season of growth delivers finals football in 2026.
