Blues hobble home after Lions defeat

An unremarkable Tongala season came to an end on Saturday, the Blues outclassed by Mulwala on the final day.

The Lions had unlikely top two ambitions and were hungry for the Murray Football League points at Tongala Recreation Reserve and the higher ranked side showed it in the opening exchanges.

Mulwala kicked the first three majors of the contest to immediately put the Blues on the back foot and took a four-goal lead into the first break.

Tongala had a better time in attack in the second, but the Lions also stepped up their production, pushing the margin beyond 40 by half-time.

The Lions managed 2.9 for the period, but Tongala couldn’t capitalise on the missed chances, only kicking two goals of its own.

Mulwala found its attacking nous in the final period and cruised to a big win, 16.22 (118) to 8.7 (55).

Sam Cipriani (2) was the only Tongala player to find the goal more than once, while Mulwala was led by Baxter Donovan and Sebastian Fernandez with four each.

After recapturing many former players in the off-season, hopes were high for Tongala’s campaign, but the Blues never really got going and end the season 5-13, one win fewer than their 2024 effort.

Mulwala took second spot from Moama with the win.
