Bombers hit turbulence in second half

Leitchville-Gunbower’s Heathcote District Football League campaign is over, despite a spirited first-half performance.

The Bombers looked to be in good form coming into the game, having pushed leader North Bendigo in the last round, and that momentum translated to a first-half lead.

Opponent Huntly did edge the first quarter on behinds at North Bendigo Oval, but an impressive second quarter showing saw L-G burst into the lead.

The Bombers kicked five goals to three in the term and clung to a 53-39 lead at the main break.

Leitchville-Gunbower pushed the margin beyond 20 midway through the third, but Huntly finally found its composure as the quarter wore on and the Hawks actually led by double digits at three-quarter time.

The Bombers fought to the end, but it was Huntly that had the momentum throughout the final term, pushing on for a 16.7 (103) to 11.10 (76) win and ending L-G’s season.

Blake Dye kicked four goals to top Leitchville-Gunbower’s scoring chart, while the Hawks’ Sam Dunstan led all scorers with five.

It concludes a mixed season for the 2024 grand finalist.

The Bombers competed with some of the top sides, especially later in the year, but all too often found themselves just short of securing the points.

Huntly goes on to face Colbinabbin at Lockington Recreation Reserve on Sunday.
