Works are expected to be completed by December and will cover around 2000 hectares across 700 locations in the coming weeks.
Locations will include Bendigo, Heathcote, Rushworth and along river frontage from Cohuna to Echuca and surrounding areas.
FFMVic Murray Goldfields District acting manager Andrew Koren said slashing the grass was one of many actions being taken to reduce bushfire risk.
“One of the ways that we reduce bushfire risk in the lead-up to summer is by managing long dry grass by slashing, which complements other activities such as planned burning, mulching and spraying,” Mr Koren said.
“Grass slashing works are carefully timed to align with the anticipated increase in grass growth; if it’s done too early, it will encourage regrowth and require follow-up treatment.”
While FFMVic works year round to reduce fire risk, reducing bushfire risk is a shared responsibility.
Community members are encouraged to remove fuels such as long grass, leaves, bark and fallen branches.
Less fuel for fire helps firefighters keep bushfires smaller and contained before they pose a risk to people, communities and the environment.
FFMVic also works with the CFA to teach community members how to prepare and take action to reduce bushfire risk.
