Victorian parents will no longer need to buy digital devices for their primary school children, easing cost-of-living pressures under new reforms announced by the Allan Labor Government.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Ben Carroll said the change would save families more than $500 per student, with schools now required to provide access to laptops and tablets.
“Digital skills are essential for kids growing up in the 2020s, but we know these devices can also be distracting,” Mr Carroll said.
“It makes sense to minimise the time that primary school students spend on devices when they are at school.”
Screen time limits will also be introduced, with students in Years 3–6 restricted to 90 minutes per day from 2027.
