The day, hosted by the Torrumbarry Community Club, aimed to highlight the significance of the levee and its history.
Kicking off at 9am, participants went on either a 7km or 4km walk along the Murray River.
TCC secretary Emily Colvin said the event was a chance for the wider community to explore the levee and its past.
“The trek itself is designed to run alongside the levy in a fun kind of community-friendly way to show awareness of why we built it and why it’s there," she said.
“Along the trek we have information stands ... and certain fun flood facts about the time because we do have a lot of new people to our town as well.
“They’ve heard about it on the news, or they’ve heard in newspapers what happened here, but they’ve never actually seen it.”
The levee was constructed by over 100 community members during the 2022 floods to protect nearby communities from rising waters.
Ms Colvin said when flood engineers had assessed the levee, they were told that without it, future floods would have devastating impacts on the surrounding areas.
While many of the participants were Torrumbarry locals, others also came from towns that rely on the levee, such as Gunbower, Cohuna, Kerang, Echuca, Deniliquin and Bendigo.
Representatives from Campaspe Shire Council and North Central Catchment Management Authority were also present to share information about flood management and recovery.
Ms Colvin said the TCC would continue to build on the success of this year’s initial event.
“So far we’ve had some great feedback, and we’ll just build on it every year,” she said.
“If people want to do something a little bit different that shows the awareness and gets the community together, then absolutely.”
Members of the TCC provided a barbecue lunch and free coffee for participants at the start and finish lines.
The trek was made possible through a $10,000 grant from Campaspe Shire Council.
With more young families and kids back in the Torrumbarry community, the TCC is working hard to create fun activities and events for everyone to enjoy in the future.
Over the next six months, the TCC team will be hosting the Twilight Tennis Night, the annual Christmas Community Event and the Torrumbarry Fishing Classic.
