Letters received at the meeting from the Member for Rodney, Mr Eddie Hann, MLA, revived the Echuca-Moama bridge controversy which has continued on and off since April, 1965.
Mr Hann sent to the council a letter he received from the Premier of Victoria, Mr Hamer, and another from the Minister for Transport, Mr Meagher.
In his letter, Mr Hamer confirmed that Cabinet has decided that the proposed new bridge over the River Murray will not be constructed on the Warren St. alignment.
The reason stated in the letter was that the Warren St. alignment would seriously affect the Port of Echuca and its associated historical areas.
Mr Hamer said that the Country Roads Board has investigated four sites upstream from the present bridge and found none acceptable.

Because of the farmers' inability to pay, the Victorian Irrigators Central Council advises all irrigators in Victoria to pay water charges and drainage rates at last year’s levels only.
The council, which met at Echuca last Friday, advised payment at this level under protest as it considered this level too high.
The council stated it could not accept a carry forward of a deficit to be eventually paid by the irrigators. Any deficit must be met by the government.

The building industry is still in a slump, four months after the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Local builders say the demand for new houses is well down on this time last year.
Commercial buildings, however, still seem to be going ahead at the same rate as they were before the GST was introduced.
Campaspe Shire only issued 55 permits for new dwellings between July 1 and October this year.
This is down from 91 issued during the same period last year.

Campaspe and Murray shire councils have addressed their concerns about the three Echuca-Moama Murray River bridge crossing options in a joint submission on the VicRoads/Roads and Traffic Authority discussion paper.
According to the mayors of the shires, Cr Neil Repacholi and Cr Brian Sharp, the joint submissions addressed many areas of concern within VicRoads’ existing options - C1, C3 and W1.
“The western option in particular impacts on the sites of cultural significance to the Yorta Yorta Nations and these have not been adequately addressed within the VicRoads proposal,” Cr Repacholi said.

Echuca pistol shooter Greg Vincent has enjoyed one of his most successful seasons in his 12-year career.
Vincent has cleaned up at the Queensland and New South Wales state titles, as well as an inaugural event at Mornington.
he has managed to claim at least one title at all three shoots, taking out the two match aggregate at the NSW titles and the Mornington shoot.
Last month he was in fine form, competing at the NSW titles in Narrandera.
“I bloody nearly won both the 25 metre and the 50 metre titles,” Vincent said.
But he lost the 25 metre shoot by a point.

After almost two long years — and a lot of travel by its locals — Mathoura has a supermarket. Finally.
Foodworks has started trading in Livingstone St and was officially opened on Saturday.
And the owners, Karla and Phillip O’Brien, said it had been going gangbusters since.
‘‘It’s been great — the community has been very supportive,’’ Karla said.
‘‘My mother who is 77 has leukaemia and is partly blind so she is unable to drive to Deniliquin or Echuca. And there are so many other people who are in a similar situation.
‘‘The town needed a supermarket, so we thought ‘Let’s do it’.
‘‘We’ve had volunteers helping us pack the shelves — we were doing 10-hour days. The support has been fantastic.’’

Matilda Terry is a world champion cross triathlete — and she has not wasted anytime getting to be that good.
Helped, she admits, by being hyperactive from a very early age.
The biggest challenge her first coach, father Simon, had was getting her to slow down.
‘‘My brother Connor and I used to run and ride everywhere, I was doing it from a very early age,’’ she said.
‘‘I just never stopped, particularly on the bike, I love to ride.’’
Better known to family, friends and the racing circuit as Tilly, the 19-year-old competed in the recent cross triathlon world championships in Sardinia and swept to victory in the 18-19 age group.
Only three years after taking up triathlons Tilly had been crowned a world champion.

An Echuca kitchen has been banned from hiring apprentices after being caught in a state-wide Victorian Government crackdown.
The business was one of more than 40 in the food services industry to be slapped with the ban after a Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority investigation.
The authority targeted dozens of businesses, including takeaway food stores, fish and chip shops, sushi and noodle bars and bakeries.
Thirty eight of the 45 businesses disqualified were in Melbourne, with an Echuca business joining others in Avoca, Bacchus Marsh, Kilmore, Shepparton, Traralgon and Wallan on the black ban list.
The authority investigated 76 employers to see whether 152 apprentices studying commercial cookery were being properly supervised and trained.
