"Shame we couldn't get a full game," Black Caps captain Mitchell Santner said.

"The more you put into yourself in those positions (of thrilling games), the more you learn."

New Zealand won the toss at Saxton Oval on Monday and chose to field. Only 6.3 overs had been bowled when the rain set in with the tourists 1-38.

The last match of the series will be played at University Oval, Dunedin on Thursday.

"We've still got a chance to level the series," said West Indies skipper Shai Hope. 

"Our main focus is that. I was looking forward to this one. Was expecting better surfaces (than in Bangladesh)."

Three one-dayers - in Christchurch, Napier and Hamilton - and a three-Test series follows in the lead up to the end of the year.

White-ball action then continues for the Black Caps against India on the subcontinent in January.
