Farmers launch petition
Local residents are being urged to show their support to grow and protect Victoria’s prime farmland by signing a new petition.
The petition is designed to remind governments and decision makers that farmers and the rural communities they support are vital to the state’s success.
Victorian Farmers Federation president Brett Hosking said Victoria’s farmland represented a huge asset that needed protecting.
“Farmers and the soil they farm are irreplaceable and I’m urging everyone to back our farmers. We must send this message loud and clear to governments right across the nation,” Mr Hosking said.
The VFF is calling for a change in how land-use decisions are made, with a particular focus on food security, local communities and long-term sustainability.

A big summer of reading
Victorian children are being encouraged to swap screens for stories during the summer holidays as part of the Big Summer Read.
Children under 18 are eligible to register and track their reading progress through the Big Summer Read website, with digital badges and prizes on offer for participants.
As part of the program, parents can register and read to children who can’t read independently yet.
Four winners will each take home a Zoos Victoria family membership, one for each age category, and local libraries from across the state will also award locally sourced prizes to participants.
The program reinforces the role of public libraries as a vital community resource for early childhood development and lifelong learning throughout adulthood.
