A permanent concrete wall flood barrier will be placed around Goulburn Valley Water’s water treatment plant in Welsford St to protect the town’s water supply in the case of future floods.
During the October 2022 flood, the site was not impacted at all by floodwater after GVW installed a temporary barrier to protect the plant.
However, GVW managing director Steve Capewell said this had highlighted the need for a long-term flood protection solution.
Mr Capewell said GVW last week secured $2 million in funding through round three of the Federal Government’s Disaster Ready Fund to strengthen the resilience of Shepparton’s water supply during future flood events.
This funding, combined with GVW’s $2.08 million co-contribution, will deliver a permanent flood barrier around the Shepparton water treatment plant.
“The barrier is designed to reduce the risk of floodwaters impacting water supply operations and enhance the resilience and security of water service delivery,” Mr Capewell said.
The project is scheduled to start in early 2027, subject to approvals.
Mr Capewell said GVW worked with the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority to complete a flood impact assessment for the proposed works.
“The Shepparton Water Supply Flood Resilience Project aligns with the purpose, vision and objectives set out in the Goulburn Broken Regional Floodplain Strategy,” Mr Capewell said.
