The Swans were coming off beating the previously unbeaten Bamawm-Lockington United the week prior and had moved into second ahead of the face-off with a Tongala side boasting only one win.
A historically slow batting side, Tongala lived up to its reputation after electing to bat first at Tongala Recreation Reserve.
There was plenty of grit, but not a huge number of runs to show for it through most of the innings.
After losing both openers cheaply, Darin Ohlsen and Adam Nunn put together a decent partnership to reach 2-44.
Ohlsen went for 12, but Nunn stayed around for much of the innings, departing shortly after the halfway mark for 30 from 60.
At 6-64, the middle and lower order retreated further into its shell to try and preserve the innings, the run rate firmly stuck in the 2s.
Lachlan Caldwell provided a late spark with 18 from 27, but was left alone not out as the Blues were all out for 107 from 46.2 overs.
Usual suspects Sachin Peiris (3-13) and Asantha Singappuli (3-18) were at it again with the ball, setting up what the Swans would have considered a more than gettable total.
Echuca South’s run chase started poorly and never showed many signs of improvement.
Losing both openers quickly, the Swans were 2-5, before Rathika Rajakumara provided some hope with a useful run-a-ball 20.
Brendan Lewis (11) and Peiris (13) also added useful knocks considering the small target, but between the loss of Lewis and number 10 Thomas Morphett the Swans lost 5-10 to be 9-68, all but sealing the game for Tonny.
Last man in Simon van Duinen attempted an unlikely fightback, making 13 not out, but the final wicket fell with South still 23 short.
Tongala shared the wickets around, but Nunn was the standout in this innings as well, keeping things tight with six overs, five maidens, 2-3.
Mitchell Cornwall (2-17) and Jesse Jackman (2-18) also grabbed two wickets each.
Echuca South lost its short-lived second place back to BLU with the result, while Tongala (2-5) is back within touch of the finals, two games outside the top four.
The Swans host finals rival Kyabram Fire Brigade this weekend, while Tonny is up against struggler Leitchville-Gunbower.
The Game
Tongala 107 (Adam Nunn 30, Sachin Peiris 3-13, Asantha Singappuli 3-18) d Echuca South 84 (Rathika Rajakumara 20, Adam Nunn 2-3)
