The veteran British singer will release a new single Been Undone with the first full moon of the new year on January 3.
"I'm delighted to say that tonight, at the full moon, we will be beginning another year of full moon releases under the name o\i," Gabriel said in a statement.
"I have been thinking about the future and how we might respond to it. We are sliding into a period of transition like no other, most likely triggered in three waves; AI, quantum computing, and the brain computer interface. Artists have a role to look into the mists and, when they catch sight of something, to hold up a mirror."
Gabriel plans to release subsequent singles on upcoming full moons.
"These are my lumpy bits," he continued, "i/o: the inside has a new way out and o\i: the outside has a new way in."
Each song will be accompanied by a piece of artwork. Been Undone includes the unveiling of Ciclotrama 156 (Palindrome) by the Sao Paulo–based artist Janaina Mello Landini.
New music from Gabriel has been a long time coming in recent decades.
It took six years to move from the classic So in 1986 to Us in 1992 and another decade before Up in 2002. Since that time, he has released the covers album Scratch My Back (2010), an orchestral reimagining of earlier songs New Blood (2011) and i/o (2023).
