Intereach program manager and early childhood educator Stacey Duke said creating a routine and practising skills are the most important things parents and carers can do to support them through the transition.
Essential skills to practise include teaching them to pack their school bag, opening their lunch box and rehearsing the bus route by learning what to do at the start and end of the journey.
Making sure children are eating well and keeping consistent bedtimes are also helpful for easing the transition.
“There are so many new and exciting things for your child to experience at school. You can talk to them about the opportunity to make new friends, access new and bigger play spaces, and learn new things. Knowing what to expect is a big part of building their confidence,” Ms Duke said.
Ms Duke encouraged parents and carers to check in with their children about their feelings ahead of the transition.
“By helping them to acknowledge and express their feelings, you can help them to navigate their emotions safely,” she said.
