Victims 1st spokesperson Lyndy Atkinson claimed Queensland's controversial "adult crime, adult time" laws are not being used after criticising the teen's sentence on Wednesday.
The teen faced Brisbane Children's Court after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm over his role in a man being stabbed in the hand during a terrifying home invasion.
The man was attacked after the then 15-year-old and four others kicked in his front door in the middle of the night.
He was sentenced to two years and three months' detention with an order to serve seven months.
The teen will be released in under four weeks due to time already spent in detention.
Ms Atkinson said the sentence was "absolutely insulting to victims".
"The community is at risk of this offender. He has had absolutely no remorse for his victim," she said outside court.
Ms Atkinson said "adult crime, adult time" laws allowed the judiciary to impose longer sentences but they were not being used.
The youth justice laws were introduced by Queensland's Liberal National government in late 2024, ensuring juveniles can face a life sentence for serious crimes like murder.
"The maximum penalty for break and enter at night and in company is life in prison and for grievous bodily harm it's 14 years," Ms Atkinson said.
"What did we get? One month."
The teen pleaded guilty to nine offences including multiple break-ins and car thefts.
Judge Ian Dearden said the teen had taken part in a "particularly nasty and extremely terrifying home invasion" of a married couple's Morningside property.
It was part of a string of break-ins across Brisbane on March 19 and 20, 2025.
"I couldn't think of anything more terrifying than waking up to find a group of five offenders, knowing at least one of them was armed with a knife," Judge Dearden said.
The resident was left with a severed finger tendon and a lacerated knuckle after confronting the intruders.
The teen had felt excitement through his offending and had used the robberies to fund luxury item purchases, crown prosecutor Blake Crook told Judge Dearden.
"He does not like boundaries nor being told what to do," Mr Crook said.
The teen had a lengthy and serious criminal history starting at age 12.
The victim provided an impact statement that said he had needed surgery on his hand and months of rehabilitation followed by spending thousands of dollars on home security.
"The assault has changed my life significantly. I have difficulties with sleeping and not feeling safe," the victim said.
Judge Dearden reduced the sentence the teen would otherwise receive as prosecutors were unsure if he was one of the group members who assaulted the resident.
The teen had no convictions recorded in what the judge called his "one last chance".
